Welcome to Holy Spirit. You are sure to find something to love and cherish in this small parish. Besides having a strong and resilient senior community, our parish incredibly has a vibrant and active youth ministry program utilizing the Life Teen and Edge ministry programs.
Growing in faith is a lifelong endeavor on our journey to live in Christ's presence for eternity. Our adult faith formation classes have an amazing participation level; I hope you'll jump in and join us for the current study.
When you feel called to active participation in the parish, let me know when you're ready to discern the ministry where your talents and gifts would be best utilized. We are blessed to have faith-filled and tireless parishioners!
In Christ's Love,
Fr. Andrew
Due to rapid growth in the areas surrounding the Kennedy Space Center in the mid-1960's, St. Teresa's parish in Titusville was split and Holy Spirit parish was established in 1967. Our boundaries stretch south from Garden Street in Titusville to the Volusia County line to the north. The western boundary is the Orange County line and east boundary is the Atlantic Ocean.
Our first pastor, Fr. Thomas D. Finn, and 400 founding families living within the new parish, celebrated our first Mass in the cafeteria of Oak Park Elementary School on Dairy Road on August 13, 1967.
Ground breaking for our church was October 20, 1968. The completed building was dedicated by Bishop Borders on September 21, 1969. The cost of the church and furnishings was twice the original budget.
The original design of the church had a center worship area surrounded by rooms. The rooms had folding walls which provided additional gathering space and plenty of natural light. The front entry into the church was originally from Holder Road, and what we now consider the vestibule, was the entrance into a small daily chapel. The altar was rotated and faced the large room during weekend Masses; for daily Masses, the altar faced the small wedge-shaped chapel and double doors closed in the space of the Sanctuary.
The exterior rooms served as CCD classrooms, and every Friday night the folding chairs would be rearranged with folding tables for a Spaghetti dinner to raise money for the new church.
The parish had grown to 500 families by the time we celebrated our first Confirmation by Bishop Borders on February 12, 1970. Thirty persons were confirmed at that time.
