If you have been participating in Life Teen and Edge here for a few years, you may have noticed that we typically meet for a Super Bowl party every year. So, why didn’t we meet this year? Well, every year we are concerned about the images and songs that are used during the Super Bowl, whether in the commercials or during the half-time show. And, every year, there is always objectionable stuff shown. It could be a wardrobe malfunction or a wildly inappropriate commercial or offensive song. We aren’t saying we are overly sensitive to it. We know you are exposed to these things all the time in everything you do. We just had a serious discussion about whether it was really appropriate for you to be exposed to these things at church and at a church event.
The tipping point this year was the Grammy awards show. From Katy Perry’s “witchcraft” to the large mixed “wedding” officiated by Queen Latifah, and rumors of something similar occurring during the Super Bowl half-time, we could not in good conscience host a Super Bowl event on the church campus.
Realizing that many of you would have chosen to attend a Super Bowl party rather than attend a competing normal Life Teen or Edge night at the same time, we decided to skip that date and continue our semester the following week. We don’t want you to miss anything!
As it turns out, the Super Bowl commercials and half-time show weren’t too bad this year. Although, the Red Hot Chili Peppers… anyway… And the rumors were just that, rumors.
Which brings us back to the Grammy awards…
We would like to extend a special invitation to all high school teens to attend the upcoming Life Night on February 23rd entitled Liberty: Homosexuality and Freedom. Come to this night and find out what the church really says about same-sex attraction. Obviously, this night was planned well in advance of the Grammy awards. However, it is timely considering this event. And, we are taking the highly unusual step of letting you see a “lesson plan” ahead of time. Look for it attached to this email. This is not the guide for the Life Night. It is the guide for a Parent Life Night on the same subject. We think it is important for you to have this information, but we will not be hosting a Parent Night on this topic.
We hope it sparks conversation at home between you & your families!
